On September 11, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a landmark lawsuit against Uber Technologies, accusing the company of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
According to the complaint, Uber drivers have repeatedly refused service to people with disabilitiesâincluding those traveling with service animals or using foldable wheelchairs. In some cases, the drivers allegedly imposed unauthorized cancellation or cleaning fees, or acted inappropriately toward disabled passengers.
The complaint claims that Uberâs policies and its driversâ conduct violate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and that these practices have inflicted economic, physical, and emotional harm on affected individuals.
The Justice Department is seeking:
â An injunction to stop further violations of the ADA,
â Reforms to Uberâs policies and training of drivers,
â Monetary damages and civil penalties.
Uber has publicly disputed the allegations, asserting that it is committed to providing accessible service and has a zero-tolerance policy for confirmed service denials.
